Fernando Alonso made a successful return to Formula One as he finished fifth in the season-opening Bahrain Grand Prix. The Spaniard, who had not raced in F1 since 2018, showed that he had lost none of his speed and skill as he battled with the top teams throughout the race.
Alonso’s performance was particularly impressive given that he had suffered a brake issue during qualifying, which saw him start from 13th on the grid. However, the two-time world champion made up several places in the opening laps and soon found himself battling with the likes of Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen.
Despite not having the outright pace to challenge for the podium, Alonso showed his racecraft by keeping the top teams in his sights and capitalizing on the mistakes of others. He crossed the line in fifth place, just behind his teammate Esteban Ocon, and was clearly delighted with his performance.
Alonso’s return to F1 has been eagerly anticipated by fans and pundits alike, and his strong showing in Bahrain will give them hope that he can still compete at the highest level. With 22 races still to come in the season, it remains to be seen whether Alonso and his Alpine team can mount a serious challenge for the title, but they have certainly made a positive start to the year.
